Background of the study
Community radio in Kano plays a crucial role in information dissemination, often utilizing the Hausa language with its rich syntactic features. Conjunctions, which link clauses and ideas, are central to maintaining coherence in broadcasts. This study investigates how community radio broadcasters employ conjunctions in Hausa to structure their messages effectively (Suleiman, 2023). The use of coordinating and subordinating conjunctions in broadcast speech not only facilitates smooth transitions but also reflects cultural norms and the dynamics of oral communication. Researchers note that broadcasters tend to simplify or modify standard syntactic constructions to suit the immediacy of live transmission and audience comprehension (Bello, 2024). This investigation employs a combination of content analysis from recorded broadcasts and interviews with radio personnel. The aim is to uncover how different types of conjunctions are used to manage discourse, signal emphasis, and construct narratives in a media setting, and to assess their role in sustaining the linguistic identity of Hausa speakers in Kano (Abdullahi, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Despite the importance of conjunctions in establishing coherent discourse, there is scant research on their use in Hausa language broadcasts on community radio in Kano. Preliminary data suggest that deviations from standard usage may affect message clarity and audience engagement (Mustapha, 2023). This study seeks to systematically document these syntactic patterns to bridge the existing gap, thereby informing best practices in broadcast communication.
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it highlights the role of conjunctions in maintaining coherent radio discourse in Hausa. Its findings will provide insights for broadcasters and language educators, thereby enhancing effective communication on community radio while supporting the preservation of linguistic traditions (Nasir, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is limited to analyzing the use of conjunctions in Hausa among community radio broadcasters in Kano. It does not extend to other media platforms or languages.
